From 10 to 23 May 2015, two members from the Disabled People’s Association (DPA) participated in a training workshop on “Initiators for Self-Help Groups of Persons with Disabilities Towards Rights-Based and Sustainable Community Development” in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop was organised by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security of Bangkok Thailand, and sponsored by Japan-ASEAN Integration fund.
The workshop aimed to equip persons with disabilities with the knowledge to strengthen a self-help group or organisation. It also served as a forum for persons with disabilities and Government officials to meet and share experiences on self-help groups, sustainable development and possible financial opportunities. Participants came from all ASEAN member states.
They were representatives from the Government and disability-oriented non-governmental organisations. During the workshop, DPA learned about the various disability issues in all ASEAN member states, and was given the opportunity to visit an independent living centre in Nonthaburi Province. DPA was happy to be part of this experience and thanks the organisers and sponsor for including DPA in this workshop.
