RESEARCH

In order to advocate for the initiatives, policies and laws that improve the lives of persons with disabilities in Singapore, we need to be informed about what the needs are on the ground. To ensure that we truly represent the disability community’s voice, we regularly consult with our members and other disability advocates and share their experiences in disability-led research and reports.

What type of research does DPA undertake?
  • Reports on the Singapore government’s implementation of international treaties: DPA monitors the progress Singapore is making on translating the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) into local policies. In 2019, DPA submitted its first parallel report to the United Nations CRPD committee. DPA is looking forward to attending the Singapore CRPD Committee session in 2022. To ensure the disability perspective is not left out of other important debates, DPA also reports on or collaborates with other organisations on reports for other international treaties such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
  • Disability-led studies: DPA works with researchers with disabilities to produce disability-led studies that inform our programmes and policy initiatives.
  • Position papers: DPA writes short position papers to provide a quick overview on topics that impact the disability community and clarify our position on it.
  • Commentaries: DPA regularly writes opinion pieces or contributes to newspaper articles about disability related topics.
  • Research on disability related topics that you can commission DPA to work on. To find out more about this service please email [email protected].
