| Description : WHETHER it's being called 'slow' and 'retarded', or having to deal with physical disabilities, the recipients of the Singapore Youth Award 2010 have truly overcome the odds. Film director Royston Tan, paralympic swimmer and gold medalist in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games Yip Pin Xiu, scientist Dr Loh Yuin Hui and entrepreneur Leonard Tan were the four outstanding individuals who were presented the highest national youth accolade on July 4, by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Mr Teo Chee Hean. But these award winners, who emerged from a pool of 93 nominees, have done more than just excel in their fields of expertise. Despite their busy schedules, Tan, a self-professed "reformed beng", also takes time to reach out to troubled youth by conducting free filmmaking classes. 18-year-old Yip who was born with muscular dystrophy, also conducts inspirational talks and swimming demonstrations to advocate inclusiveness in sports.
So who inspired these outstanding individuals? Following in the footsteps of his mentor, Dr Loh cited Dr Ng Huck Hui, recipient of this year's Medal of Commendation, as one of his inspirations. Dr Ng was also awarded the Singapore Youth Award in 2005 for his outstanding scientific achievements, and for being an excellent role model for young scientists. |
